Privacy concerns

Reasons for becoming a Wikimedia project?

Just curious: What do you hope to get by becoming a Wikimedia project? Funding? Hosting? Traffic? --Dallan 09:43, 4 March 2006 (EET)

I don't mean to be rude by answering this question which you have directed at Baya, but it was my suggest that we became a wikimedia project. Funding, and hosting weren't my main concerns. It is as you say, traffic. At the moment there are only at most 10 users. Becoming a wikimedia project will mean many more, and we will be seen as a much more recognised site (if you can tell what I'm getting at). I don't think theres any real reason not to try to become a wikimedia project, its just whether we will be accepted.--Bjwebb 11:17, 4 March 2006 (EET)
  • I suggest Ben's words. And can add: Wikimedia in first case is a sites society with same human idea, policy, community, etc - it is not a FHT - it is a way to NEW HUMAN OPEN FREE SOCIETY. All other is a just nessesary things that can be found not only into wikimedia :) At this time wikimedia supported by many servers in different countries. I can help a little with traffic. I'm giving a talk on using wiki's for genealogical research at BYU's annual Computerized Genealogy Conference later this week. I'd like to emphasize Rodovid as an example. In the meantime, I wish you the very best on your proposal. Even though a family tree wiki may use different means to achieve their goals than wikipedia (e.g., allow pages to contain information based initially upon personal conjecture), the goal is the same: eventually turn that information into well-researched, evidence-based articles containing historical facts relating to individuals and relationships. BTW, an idea for gedcom export: you need a simple way for people to select the individuals to export. --Dallan 06:57, 6 March 2006 (EET)

I am slightly doubtful that Rodovid has an opportunity to become a Wikimedia project for the following reasons:

  1. Incompatible codebase. Customization between Wikimedia projects at the software level, due to the shared codebase, cannot extend much further than different custom namespaces.
  2. Not truly free. A Rodovid edit page does not provide a true window into the internal page code.
    Dallan has raised a good point below about form-based entry; also, pure wiki editing was one of the disadvantages of WikiTree (people would always put in the default values and everyone else would run around cleaning up after them). Wikiacc 23:04, 8 March 2006 (EET)
  3. Wikimedians don't seem very friendly to the family tree wiki idea. GlobalFamilyTree never gained any traction at Meta-Wikimedia, and discussion about a similar project (WikiTree) becoming a Wikimedia project similarly stagnated.
  4. The catch-22 of traffic: if lack of traffic reflects upon a lack of support of Rodovid, that will definitely be a negative in the eyes of most Wikimedians; if there is a significant amount of traffic, the point raised above by Dallan and Bjwebb is rendered moot.

There is some hope, however: if the Rodovid engine can be adapted for genealogical semantic relationships between notable people, it may be an ideal candidate for deployment as part of Semantic MediaWiki. Please comment. Wikiacc 22:45, 7 March 2006 (EET)

    • Extensions and hooks are too ingrained into the codebase to be compatible.

      • sorry for my bad words. In deal. Wikitree has a very important problem: with leaf it is imposible to show big trees in acceptable time (text parsing in any case will take a huge time). Also wikitree from its beginning have not a possibility of convinient work with genealogical data: trees, pedigree, grouping, etc. (for example surnames list, years list). Of course the rodovid has many other problems.
        • Yes, I agree Wikitree has a number of inherent flaws. Rodovid is a better system (not to mention it has none of Wikitree's headache-inducing licensing issues). Note that I have retracted my point above about form-based entry.
  4. Maybe I use word «traffic» in wrong way. I mean that ip data channel to world is not unlimited (now it is a 0.5Mbit)..... And it will be a problem to me to expand channel... But it is not nearest future or ....
    • So you were referring to bandwidth then? If you have enough traffic that that becomes an issue, a PayPal donations system could surely be set up to buy a higher bandwidth limit.

        • I hadn't thought of that. Essentially, though, my point is that there should be some donation- or advertising-based method to receive money to support the site.
  5. Project for people ... without requiring humans to read the articles. Is better I shall keep silent.
    • Could you please rephrase that? That seems slightly contradictory: if it's for people, than humans would surely read the articles (unless Rodovid is really run by super-intelligent hamsters. :-P)
      • Wikipedia is a project for people. Second part of my phrase is a part of desciption of logo of Semantic Wikipedia. It's a collage.
      • Semantic analysis of any text has many different mechanism, methods, ideas etc for different languages. And any can't automaticaly translate or schematize most of phrases even into artificial language - esperanto. Wikipedians is a real mechanism of symantic wikipedia. Nobody can create schematic analiser of any living language. If something like will be created it will be artificial intelligence. So using of artificial intelligence will be cost same as using simple individual. It is not development problem it is a phylosophy one.

I've been lurking on the Semantic MediaWiki mailing list for awhile. It's a pretty interesting project, and I've been trying to think about ways in which it could be applied to genealogy. Here's what I've come up with: Most people who do genealogy are not technologists. They currently use form-based data entry applications to enter facts about events and relationships between individuals. They also use navigational screens and reports that are based upon specific configurations (sub-graphs) of the data they have entered (e.g., 4-generation pedigrees, family group sheets, descendency charts). The sub-graphs could be thought of as the result of (XML) queries over the data. The ability to enter arbitrary facts and links, and generate arbitrary screens and reports by writing your own queries is interesting, but I think primarily as an add-on to pre-defined templates due to the technology level of most of the users. (Although the idea of letting people choose from additional community-supplied templates would be cool.) Baya has created essentially a set of pre-defined templates for data entry and display, and has also created a way to convert data from the standard genealogy data-exchange format (gedcom) into the wiki. My question is, how interested is the Semantic MediaWiki project in extending their foundational "structured-links" concepts with pre-defined templates for a specific vertical application?--Dallan 07:15, 8 March 2006 (EET)

  • Welcome. I'm happy to see you here :) At this time most important to create very userfrendly person editor. At curent stage very offen mistakes occure with othernames and other surnames. I add some features (Current events/News) and they must be described into help (Ben, Rob, Morais work for it). Also recently I recode gedcom import procedure. Rob give me a good comments about it I will work with this at near time.

In general project need:

  1. Help for newbies
  2. General help
  3. Examples of wiki features using (Kings Category, etc... )
  4. Testing & criticism
  5. Gedcom import testing and observation
  6. Ideas. I have very much myself ideas and don't know what is a more important, at current moment I work with: gedcom import, gedcom update, Ben request for export feature but there are exists already 6.0 version...., Global person search, Grouping by year, Watching for clans ...

FWIW, MediaWiki and MySQL seem to scale well with respect to the number of articles. I have a wiki with approximately 1.8M articles running on a single-cpu, 2GB, 2-disk machine. Based upon some crude tests it appears that the machine is capable of processing several queries a second, at which point it appears to be CPU-bound, not IO-bound.--Dallan 06:33, 6 March 2006 (EET)

Is there a reason google is allowed to show people on Rodovid? I think I'd have a much easier time convincing my family that a Wikitree is ok if that were somehow disabled. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Shim

I deleted some people, but they're still showing up on google because they're in its cache. That defeats the purpose of deletion. Is there anything that can be done to prevent google indexing records? Help! Shim

  • One of ways in that Rodovid can be used it is to find somebody. Why you afraid to show your name and birth date at internet? In any case, I will add special field for records "NO INDEX BY ROBOTS", so if users mark it, google and most of other robots will not index marked pages. --Baya 10:50, 15 January 2007 (EET)

Thanks Baya, this should help. But what happens to the peolpe I've deleted that are in Google's cache? Should I contact Google about that, or is that something only you can do? Because Google's help page says, "The "Cached" link will be missing for sites that have not been indexed, as well as for sites whose owners have requested we not cache their content." Internationalization

Apparently, some of the WikiMedia messages (non-Rodovid) have not been translated in the original source. I am now translating some messages on nl:, but I would appreciate if you could be careful updating the messages from the WikiMedia sources since that could overwrite the efforts. Of course it will be pleasantly for me to use "rodovid" as project name. Wikipedia is also not a usual english word :) But, at this time we have small - but very active community. And imho, questions like this, we can resolve in community :) BTW, prefix wiki has a dry month for me. Can you imagine autobmw, automersedes, autovolvo, autochevrolet etc :) Don't forget, most active users in meta and wikipedia maillist can speak english, but english not a world global language. Development

rodovid.org looks good, but needs a little more cowbell.

You have a very good basic model (much better than wikitree), but there are still some issues that need addressing.

I would tell you what I think but I think first you need to speak to BrionVibber and set up to borrow the http://bugzilla.wikipedia.org tracker with your own product. Reporting bugs via doesn't work very well via a wiki process, and you may attract the attention of a few other developers.

Oh and could you make me a sysop please? I am a sysop in the English Wikipedia so you can trust me. :) There are miscellaneous things that need to be done, such as making sure the English in the MediaWiki: namespace is correct. Duncharris 18:13, 25 March 2006 (EET)

Yeah, that'd be good. The biggest problem as far as I can see is that I think you need to have one wiki with language options specified in special:preferences (and with English as default). Specifying language with an en: uk: (etc) prefix for each language, IMVHO isn't going to work. One set of multilingual users running together like Wikimedia Commons is going to be better. I have lots of other minor ideas as well but I think that's the biggest issue (and probably the one that's going to be most difficult to fix). Duncharris 23:09, 25 March 2006 (EET)

Well I think having difference domains for different languages is unnecessarily overcomplicated and is user-unfriendly. I understand that you want it multilingual but you should get it working in one language first. If you are to share data between wikis, you need to use one wiki with languages in special:preferences. Otherwise you have separate wikis, and do not share data between them.
You have two advantages over wikitree: (1) you have better database design with person:$number system rather than using names. (2) you have a useful data entry skin. However, I think this language problem is a potentially fatal flaw and would not support it as a MediaWiki project unless it is fixed.
Also, don't underestimate the intelligence of your users. If there are proper instructions in their own language they will follow them. Anyway, the other people round here should comment. Duncharris 00:13, 26 March 2006 (EET)

Multilingual

  1. One db for all languages and person:number kill possibility of translations. Really all persons data stored into ONE global db - so persons global search is not a problem, just must be coded (search for father, mother, spouses is a global). All wiki localisations are different and very convienient interfaces to this global db :) (this is very short description, but full)
  2. Does anybody have seen statistics of crosswalking between languages into wikipedia? imho, putting all languages (not data about persons) into one wiki will present to as new Babylon :)
  3. person:number is have not fatal but important disadvantage - posibility of many different records even in "one" localisation. - this can be resolved only by intelligent community. We hope it will exists.

User intelegence

I don't underestimate any users. I know that everybody can understand anything, but with very important condition - if he will desire to undertand it. one BUG to bugzilla... can you do this ? :-)

Baya, some times the INSERT of person isn't registered in Recentchanges ! See this two examples of NOT COMPLETE record, inserted by Ana Paula... her record is registered in Recentchanges as "N!", but the 4484 and 4485 isn't registered as NEW nor modified... The HISTORY of theses records is empty too !!! I noted these HISTORY problem in other records, too! What's happened in this case !???? Thanks. Morais 06:53, 31 March 2006 (EEST)

  • 4484 & 4485 are records that just can be possible father for 4483. User press 'Add new father' but don't save record about father ((( This is not a records and they are not shown anywhere. You can access them only manually, occationally these records are deleted automatically.
  • In previous versions of record 4483 this records was used as FATHER ID, but in each change, new version, this ID is changed and last version is without FATHER ID... !? Morais 18:53, 31 March 2006 (EEST)

Robots.txt again

I just noticed that Rodovid can make it very difficult to find relevant information in google about people, since the name of a person can occur in very many Special:Tree pages, and also via all different languages. I would suggest to disallow robots from downloading the Special:Tree pages; this will also save a lot of CPU time on your server. Rob Hooft 10:32, 2 April 2006 (EEST)

Can I see ALL changes/inserts on PT db by date ?

Baya, exist any special page to see ALL changes and inserts only on PT db ? The Newrecords and the Changedrecords pages (Special) show ALL DBs... Does accept these pages any parameter, as DB, to I see only modifies in PT db? Some peoples using the GEDCOM PARSER/IMPORT and not logged in RecentChanges... but these Special pages show ALL modifies in ALL databases... :-( It's very complicated to watch errors of new records... Need help for French translation

Sorry for the inconvenience since i'm a rookie in Wiki's world, but I know a bit about genealogy and i feel i can contribute to Rodovid as well. I have two questions at the moment : since i've modified RdLanguageFr.php on http://fr.rodovid.org why the modifications are not taken into account ? secondly i've some problem with the "clan" concept, is that the scotish concept of clan or is it someting else ? in France we don't have that concept, people have name, surname and don't belong to a particular clan except noble but in this case it is attached to the name.

  • I'm glad to see you here. RdLanguageFr.php - is an initial version of project system messages in french. Generally these files (fr and other languages) situated only at engine.rodovid.org. Sometimes I update these file into engine from real db system messages with special script. Somebody copy its to french real db - it is not need there (I think it will be better to delete it at fr). If you want to change text of system messages and manage fr localisation with more rights I can give to you sysop rights and you will be enable edit articles into MediaWiki namespace (this namespace contains all system messages, also you can find list of all messages at special page Special:Allmessages). I need also some help about "clan" concept, and i'll be glad to know what are the keys for the database : name, surname, date of birth, ? When you import Gedcom what are the algorithm which decided if the person is already in the database.

Community portal and others

Hey bud, great site. I was wondering if we might be able to start work on a Community portal of some kind to sort of organize the norms of this site and facilitate some community creation. I was also wondering if you might add some programming so that we can see some simple generational reports. For example, who's the oldest-to-youngest of my generation? How many boys/girls are in the generation? Finally, I just tried to restart discussion on making this a WikiMedia project. Any news on your end? -- Stlouisuguy

  2. At current time I try develop next version of rodovid engine, but unfortunatly, last two months I had very hard my money work ((( So at current situation, I'm still on beginning (((. Main things that must be coded into new version are: 1) speeding up page generation, 2) record merging, 3) raw records code for bots, 4) some important changes into gedcom and inventory processing and 5) most bugs and enhencement added to bugzilla. After that we must merge with WikiTree.org (All important agrements are recieved and pause only at new rodovid version....)

I understood that you are the creator of this site. If I may, I have a few suggestions:

  1. On Clan: pages, it would be useful to show the number of people.
  2. More important, on Special:Tree pages, it would be much more useful to display the list of family names at the bottom by alphabetical order. Otherwise, the list is not quite useable when it becomes large. cf. fr:Special:Tree/23299.
  3. On the same pages, it would be useful to should the number of people in the tree.
  4. The edit of marriages is a bit cumbersome: f.e. it's not possible to add a person before adding the date of the marriage.
  5. And there is a bug as it is possible to create marriage with two persons of the same sex. I know it's a fashion nowadays, but... ;o)

So could you please create ro.rodovid.org? Then I will translate also the usual MediaWiki messages. I've done this before in the Romanian Wiktionary where I am sysop :P. Move records to other localisation

Hello, I have decided to move to the Romanian Rodovid the records that I have put in the English one. I think it's more normal for them to be there, and this way there will be some records in that localisation too :P. I also want to delete them from English because it's easier to update just one record. But it seems that I can only delete people from the last generation. Wikipedia template

It's a good idea to have a template like that, because it will attract more users. I changed the English one a bit. I put the link Rodovid instead of Rodovid.org, because Wikipedia articles on websites usually are named like this. I changed genealogy tree to family tree because I think the latter is much more usual, and also this people to this person. However, there might be a problem. As far as I know, unregistered users can only see trees up to 10 generations. So if there is a bigger tree, they won't be able to see all of it (assuming that most Wikipedia users don't have a Rodovid account). Hi, Baya! How can I see a list of ALL TITELINES registered ? I'm not found one page for this in list of Special Pages... Hi Baya. I like to see what TITLES exists to select the better option for each person/people... Why the option TITLE hasn't the (own) field to type/description of TITLE ? The add info field has other informations that not show other peoples with same TITLE... it`s everytime different...   1. I have converted mediawiki databases to 1.9.3 version, but web interface work yet on 1.5.8 mediawiki engine. So, some features are present in system messages but not in php code ((( after new code implementation - all will be ok.
  2. "Rd_flist_showonlylocal" is using at Newrecords in new rdengine version, but not in old. See Special:Newrecords
  3. Lineage is more understandable english word. No any additional efforts from users not needed. All old links will be works as predicted.

  • at engine.rodovid.org you can work only with TEST DB. Some time ago I have copied some records from real db to test db, but partially, so TEST db contain unreal data. I deleted Person:1073.

3) Clan was lost in all records ? Or I entered these records in my first TEST without a clan... ?

Some Questions

Hello Baya, great site - I am really impressed with it and find it easier to edit than WikiTree. I have some questions:

  • Hello Jeff, thanks for kindly words.

1) What is the status on the merge with WikiTree, WeRelate? Above you mention that next version of rodovid was required before a merge might be discussed - any progress on this? Frankly, I think rodovid's code/interface should be adopted as it (is it version 0.1). Once the merge happens, would it become a MediaWiki project? I think consolidation is very important for these projects to really take off.

  • WikiTree - I didn't receive any answer from Tomas - a maintainer of WikiTree. But I still hope that we can merge our efforts.
  • WeRelate - currently situation is not so good for me. Dallan (maintainer of WeRelate) want use rodovid just as code farm and propose to me just a some payment as for developer. I can't suggest it.
  • MediaWiki - You mean Wikipedia project? - some times ago I have received letter from Gil Penchina about rodovid hosting at Wikia. But our discussion stops, so now I just continue to develop rodovid.
  • New version. Generally it is finished, you can test it here. I must just recode GEDCOM parser, and after that I'll implement it at real db. (I thought that I does it up to this week, but ...).
  • Consolidation. Imho, it is simplest and best way to achieve something in current situation.

2) What is the status of the project - is it self-funded, how many servers, etc? How do you plan to fund it? How can it be made faster? If a merge doesn't happen, what is the plan for continued existence (I don't want to contribute heavily to a project that doesn't have a plan for the future).

  • Currently it is self-funded. You can see list of servers here. Two of these server not my, only adam kindly provided to maintain just a rodovid. Some notes: the real db now powered by not pure 0.1 version - tree generation powered by 0.2. This was most important acceleration - more then 5 times. But even without new tree generation 0.2 is 30-40% quickly then "0.1*". I didn't use memcache and average page service time is 800-1200ms. Weakest spot is db server, it also serve IMAP for our institute, so in our work time (EEST) some lags can take 20-30 seconds. Even adding memcache does not resolve it (?), so now I'm looking for tree machines for minimal mysql cluster instead of raid at foxy. After that memcache will be useful and speed up rodovid very significant. Adam loaded for 1-2% and reduce loading of ftp for 10%, which loaded for 20-30%. Foxy loaded for 30-100%. Every day it used by not less then 450 hosts (crawlers don't count, by awstats). In average, rodovid takes 5Kbit/sec around the clock now.

3) Do you have a contingency plan if you go bankrupt (i.e. to offer the database up for public consumption/import into other projects should rodovid go "belly-up").

  • I'm planing to not bankrupt :) But it is very important question - all people don't want to lose they efforts - not me neither customers. For example, as ancestry.com wrote - they we'll be glad to receive it, as, imho, any other public database will be interesting in same data.

4) Any plans to support SVG rendering of family trees?

  • I have so many plans and ideas )))))))))))) But there are some main development directions:
    1. usability (localizations, help, speeding up)
    2. privacy (I have new concept about it)
    3. gedcom import/export/reimport
    4. printing. Imho, now SVG is a simplest way to make hard copy of graphical tree/chart, I have not seen any browser that print wide pages in true way. btw, any chart can be presented as SVG, so I have object that can create trees/charts, and php to svg converter is needed.

5) You seem to be getting spammed here a lot. Not sure how to prevent that, but maybe time to delete that page and/or block some IP addresses?

  • "Wk" is a second page in spammed pages. Approximately I delete it every 3 days. It is spammed from many addresses, possibly throw open proxies.

But I'm noted that NAME OF PERSON in the EVENTS has been changed of position with PLACE+Info... to the end of data...
Can you return the name to previous position, after and close to the event date ?
Same problem occur in TREE.
And the TREE is using description/name of event for Birth and Death and not more the SYMBOL(*, +)... Why use the description if symbol is very small ? Exemplo: pt:Person:1281.
How can I add in the page of PLACE a list of persons that has same Place ? Exists any template or code to do this ?

Baya, now I can't access the new page to RECOVER/Restore pages and versions of deleted itens... Is this new feature available only to the group "developer" and not to SYSOP ? error on nl

Hi Baya, since the new layout/software the function http://nl.rodovid.org/wk/Persoon:Me don't work anymore. How can this be corrected? Next to that when I try to edit the titles on the tabs are in english, where can I change them in to dutch text?

New translation

Ok, I've begun translating. I have a few questions for you.
  • The rd_tip appears in bold only in the relations tab, when adding/editing a person. Should it be like that? (This is just about style :P.)
  • In rd_flist_clan, there is a variable $2, the number of persons in the clan, but it doesn't seem to appear any more (for example).
  • I used to have a tree on my user page using the showtree tag, but it doesn't seem to work any more. I copied it from the sandbox; but now I searched for the sandbox and there was an error.
  • What are the tags rd_clanautotranslation and rd_clanautotranslationstext and how do they work?
  • Some MediaWiki messages don't appear in the allmessages page (for instance, rd_tip). I guess this isn't a problem, I'm just curious...

tab RELATIONSHIPS - can you change position/order ?

Hi Baya! Can you change the RELATIONSHIPS tab position to after NOTES ? This tab has some button to ADD PERSON and FAMILY, and can be used before enter other data in fields of others tab... If the position of RELATIONSHIPS could be the last(between NOTES and languages), these buttons will be used after complete all other fields and tabs... Do you understand me ? Thanks.   • Tab "Conjuges" in family edit pages must be moved also to last position? Imho, this is not a good decision. There are exists "short" tips over "(dica)" that can be used to fully describe all that we need. But main text before form must be shorter, because of people that read help will read it from dica, but idiots will never read help, even if you write 5 pages of help before form. Well... Good question ! I perceived the error when registering a new person, where I felt me induced to use the button to add person (parents, children, brothers) before completing the register of the current person... But in the family I did not feel this difficulty because in general I register first both people (parents) and children, and only for last, the family... The text before FORM already existed and I still did not modify, but I will change it! :-) I believe that moving the position ONLY of the group RELATIONSHIPS (PARENTES) for after NOTES (NOTAS) will be better and we will prevent incomplete register of the people! Кстати, есть мысль - автоматически заносить всех людей, у которых заполнено поле Вики-страница в отдельную категорию. Мне кажется это было бы удобно, если, конечно, осуществимо на уровне движка. But I think that I don't understand the useful of this template "en:Template:User clan"... ?
Portuguese localization has a lot of MORAIS families that I don't know and don't linked to same tree/origin... What is advantage to use this template at my user page ?
IMHO is very better has the WATCH option at the CLAN's or LINEAGE's page to notice me when a new people enter(was added) at watched clan... :-)
The reverse has been useful too.... show the users interested in the CLAN searched, at clan`s page... In the user`s page it does not seem to not be useful... ?
If It's a new template why they redirect to another template en:Template:User lineage ?

Can you add CHILDREN group to Tab FamilyMembers in Family edit pages ?

Hi, Baya!
Why the button to add children (and a list of children too) at FamilyMembers("Conjuges") has been removed from the FAMILY page edit... and is available only at each parents in Person Edit page ?
After create a new family and selected members/persons is more logical to ADD children of this family, or not ?
Can you add same CHILDREN GROUP (with button ADD PERSON) of PERSON edit page in the FAMILY edit page ? :-)
