I've spread around on some forum my work about one village. This is a forum dedicated about genealogy in this particular small sub-area of normandy.

Peoples are really amazed, not because of my work but because of the look of it! They can't believe that any record has a tree "from grandparents to grandchildren". (argh they are more impressed by your work than mine ;-))

Some reactions:

• "This is clear and sharp"
• "great work" etc...

So tell me: why don't they come and share their knowledge in Rodovid?

Maybe because each of them is working on a particular huge gedcom file from 25 years now, with 10 20 or 30 thousands records? One of them says that she has 95.000 records in her work!

Baya, how shall we jump this step?

Well. I have to tell you that Rodovid is getting slower and slower since december. Nowadays it is almost unusable: more than 30 seconds waiting when creating a new page...

I hope this is because you're working hard in basement of Engine. If it is the reason why, so there's no more problem: we'll wait the end of your work.

If it is for some other reason, we do have to think about any solution: mirror server, or any possibility you can imagine.

Have you any idea?

I have rearranged servers last time. But, imho, it should have no influence on page generation time. You can check page generation time at the bottom of page source. If all is in order, it should be less 1 sec. Sometimes (when I clear pages cache) page generation time can be more than 30 seconds, but this period generally must be shorter than 30-40 minutes. --Baya 14:32, 12 квітень 2012 (EEST)

I will watch this "page generation time", it seems strange.

Nowadays I'm talking about RD in some normandy genealogical group. They're thinking about using a part of Rodovid.FR as a wiki around their database: 700.000 records in... geneanet (argh). I think it's a really strange but good idea. They are really serious genealogists, using primary sources and writing these source in every record they make!

It hurts me: I write you some words, once more time, because RD is going bad. When creating or modifying any page we have: the «session_fail_preview» message. And we have to save three or four times to make it working...

We have also lots of errors like this:

Can you find a little time to work in rodovid engine? Or are you over booked with some other occupation?

Some news from Rodovid.FR:

• we now have 5 or 6 regular users, making quality records. We don't make lots of new records (there was a time we were creating 100 per day, nowadays only 30 or 40) but there is still as much contributions: this means that users are more and more precise in their work.
• Alain is asking (one more time ;-) if it's possible for you to give admins the ability to use the gedcom import: he propose himself to verify quality of gedcom files before including them in DB. Is it possible?

My name is Jaakko Paavilainen, but from my mother's side our old sur-name is Uschakoff. (russian Ushakov)

I am after my ancestors and I found a family-tree of Гавриил Фёдорович Ушаков.

I am really interested in the current / last generations of Ushakovs, but they are hidden: (103 families and 71 persons are hidden)

A question:

How can man look for those hidden persons? - I am really interested in Ушаков's of 1700's till today.

Sorry Baya, this time there's a big deep problem: we have to save 2 times, 3, 4, 5, 6 times for each record. «Page generation time» is running from 2.5 to 7 seconds. Really slow: each asked page displays after more than 20 seconds: so it's more than a minute to save a record. Rodovid is quite unusable here. • I see no problems now. Maybe main server is overloaded some times (I have checked statistics - ~950000 request per hour to db server). Hello Baya,

I disappeared for long months because of too much load of work...

Now I'im trying again to prepair some genbot to upload the database from gencom files.

I tried to create some new persons : it seems to work.

But I can't see how I could create the <family> record. Is it possible ? Is there any url to to that ?

It seems that it's impossible to create a new acount on RD nowadays!

A new user have found my phone number (he's a nice searcher), and told me it's impossible to register.

The last new user in France registered on july the 12th.

I could create a new acount : User:Test. It seems it's because I have the right cookie on my HD.

I gave the account and password to this new user. Have you any idea?

I know you have more important to take care than Rodovid these days!

But:

• We have this message for each edit in RD: « 145: Table './rd_a/wiki_searchindex' is marked as crashed and should be repaired (db.p-net) »
• It seems it's impossible to create a Familly: record.
• Hooks you made: <pcount></pcount> - <pcount>FR</pcount> etc. do not work.
• Search page does not work etc.

So the best genealogy site in the world (I mean RD) seems very sick...

1. wiki_searchindex crashed 3 time for last week (( I have repaired it every time asap.
2. I have created record for family just. When you see error message about wiki_searchindex table during record saving, record is saved but not indexed in search db. I will run rebuild search db after moving.
3. this hooks was written very heavily. I turned off them temporary.
4. after wiki_searchindex repairing search will work again.

Доброго вечора, Ярославе. Виникла наступна проблема - коли пишу "Іван Степанів син" ("Степанів син" - в якості по-батькові) то слово "син" в українській (і російській) локалізаціях залишається без змін, а коли пишу "Марія Степанова дочка", то проект виправляє на "Марія Степанова Дочка" пишучи слово з великої букви. Таке враження, що слово "син" записано у список винятків, стосовно яких дану процедуру (зміни регістра першої літери слова у складі імені людини) не застосовувати. Здравствуйте, Ярослав! Я с некоторыми родственниками создал довольно большое дерево в Родоводе, он очень удобен для коллективной работы. Однако в связи с последними трудностями сайта хотелось бы забэкапиться. Насколько я понял, сейчас экспорт в Гедком не работает, но может быть есть какой-то способ экспортировать мое дерево в Гедком в индивидуальном порядке или какое-то иное решение для сохранения дерева на жестком диске, чтобы не перебивать весь объем информации вручную? Я попробовал другие генесайты и лишний раз убедился, что Родовод - лучший. Единственная проблема - несовместимость с Гедкомовским форматом. Помогите! С уважением, --Л.П. It seems you've found an nice mediawiki trick. By seting search-page unusable, you by-pass the "search index table crash" and it's now possible to work, to create familly records etc. When users have recorded all Clan-pages in a localization, it's not so difficult to find any Person-page, by searching in its Clan-page.

So : it's now possible to make some genealogy in Rodovid! Good news!

But, we are loosing more ans more users because it's still not really cool to work around in RD. For instance, it seems that english localization has no more active admin. So I hope, we will find a way (you will...) to fix all problems.

The worst thing is that it's impossible to create new accounts. So I've created a "test account" which password is public : test. So then new users can work in RD. Spam bots didn't find this way to spam until now...

Some other good news : Morais is translating events viewer system messages in brazilian localization. So we're always some fans!

This could be really important for RD !

I don't clearly understand your state of mind about WikiMedia Fondation. Did they bore you more than possible in 2006 ?

The help of «WMF» could be a really big thing : if we have it, we (the users) could find partnerships with lots of people : genealogy local organizations, archives administrations and so on... And then RD will grow. Because then, we could show we are well established... OK, maybe engine will probably have to fall (then) in public domain, maybe not. But you will have the paternity of it. And then the ability to show this as a «master reference». What about that?

I will be glad to have your opinion about that !

I'm not sleeping )))

Since June I'm working on the problem of moving the RD to a new hosting. Generally, I've prepared most of the new servers for the RD and I have already paid for the hosting. It was time consuming )) The new message has come just before the very important moment!! I was like a fool for more then two days. So I have started to move RD at the end of the working week instead of staring it on Wednesday.

Yesterday I have tried just to move the title domain to the new server. Unfortunately something was wrong in domain name resolving. Currently all RD domains resolve to the old servers and on Tuesday I will continue to work for true resolving.

Generally what WMF can propose now except possible discussion about possible hosting for rodovid? Under what conditions? How long these discussions will last? I don't know. At this time I will keep up with my plan (of course it is not an ideal plan)))) Of course we can discuss future and current interactions. As an example, the RD community can propose WMF to make some payments for the RD hosting.

I knew you wasn't sleeping ! Well, these are great good changes for RD. You're just about to complete the migration, this is génial (huh, what is the translation? "More than great"?)

We just thank you for all this work !

Now we can say we (will) have a true hosting solution. I hope it will improve RD. But I think it's not a reason to bag any partnership with WMF :

1. because anyway, we'll have to propose a site wich is confortable with local laws (75 - 110 -120 years?).
2. we'll have to propose a site looking sustainable. People need to feel that they work in a stable site.
3. because WMF is a stamp : with this we could search partnerships with local genealogy organizations, and later with official archive sites and so on.

WMF has recently given the "sister project" stamp to sites far from being as intersesting as RD. Wikivoyage is almost empty (for instance).

Maybe we can ask for this stamp, and maybe a mirror hosting?

This could be the best way for RD to become sustainable : it could have both advantages being hosted in and out WMF.

If you want I can try to lead the discussion with wmf. We'll see how they react... Is it ok for you?

Hello Christophe,

all the time the RD hosting was a most unconvinient and expensive thing for me. Limited hardware takes off all of my power and spirit. I was always looking for the hosting. The modern cloud technology enables me to forget about the hardware and its managment. Also general question of money still persist, but it is not the first question (but not the last))))).

Current RD state requires one powerfull server! (and I' going to optimize it) Mirroring? In most cases mirroring is used for the static content. RD even in current (as for me in very bad) situation is growing continuosly. Mirroring is not the best and even not a good solution.

RD requires backups. But one backup I will place on my old servers. Another will be at the american pool of the current hoster. Also I can buy the storage at Amazon for a couple of backs.

Users? I'm not sure that many users is good. Who will clear the Augean stables? To be best, RD must be a professional or at least a good quality service.

Stamp? When RD appeared on Wikipedia I have created the template for the link to rodovid. It was deleted few times by sysops ))) But later some other users have recreated this template again. Now hundrends of WP articles have boxes linked to RD. The better will be RD the more links to RD there will be (not only on Wikipedia). Quality is the first question in the genealogy realm.

So currently, with the new hosting, I'm not sure that we should continue discussions with WMF. Will they give us users? Places for backups? Stamp? Burocracy?

Maybe I don't understand (and it is mostly true)) but I really do not know (IN THE CURRENT STATE) what we can propose them and what they can propose us that we both don't have now?

• This is a good idea from you to clearly write your personal wishes and projects about RD.
• Some of your positions are shared (here) by some admins. It was written (somewhere on Rodovid.FR) that RD has no reason to be a site for beginners... I have to admit I don't understand why. Personnaly I begun genealogy with RD!
• My template (linked to RD) was also deleted in WK.fr...
• Maybe we have to wait some weeks (or some months?) for Rodovid to start again, to have a larger discussions with users of all localizations?
