[edit] Categories

Hi to you too. Congratulations on creating the one and only category on Rodovid EN. Are they discouraged, or is it just that the main users are unaware of their value?? Robin Patterson 10:43, 4 April 2006 (EEST)

I don't think most users are aware categories can be placed in the notes field; I only knew because Baya had linked to the category at the Abraham Lincoln page. I merely created the page and added it to pages for both Bush presidents and the George Washington page (which I was working on at the time). It's not possible that they could be discouraged, as Baya was the one who suggested the category.
Categories do have a few problems, though, among them the following:
  • inability to sort by set text: in a regular wikipage, one can add a link of the form [[Category:Presidents of the United States|Lincoln, Abraham]] and it will appear under L at the category page--but in these categories, because of the way the pages are set up, it sorts under the letter but displays incorrectly: a glance at the page reveals that Mr. Lincoln is sorted under L, but the letter used to sort is A. Baya can surely help with this.
  • The automatic addition of a language prefix to the link causes other languages to have the text [[en:Category:Presidents of the United States]], resulting in an interlanguage link. Baya can help address this as well.

[edit] Please, don't change my record in EN db !

Hi Wiki!

You changed my record en:John Beaufort (Beaufort, b. 1371 d. 1410) today in ENGLISH db of rodovid.... Please, don't change my record, because each language has one database (DB) and my NEW, ACTUAL and CURRENT record is in PT db !

Do you don't see an alert in top of EDIT page... that this person has an other version most recent... ???

Thanks! Morais 02:44, 8 April 2006 (EEST)

  • I think if record exists in native language it must be deleted from other localisation if it not translated (As in current situation). --Baya 10:22, 8 April 2006 (EEST)
  • Ahhhh.... OK! But when I delete record in English db I'm not deleting PERSON totally, only from DB in use, is it ? I don't deleted because I think command delete will be affect ALL db... :-) Thanks! Morais 20:56, 8 April 2006 (EEST)

I didn't understand when I made the edit (the message was a bit unclear) but it seems you and Baya have sorted out the problem. Thanks. Wikiacc (?) en (?) | de (?) 20:53, 16 April 2006 (EEST)

[edit] places

Hi, don't spend your time for category of places. I will recode Place pages and they will show included places and people with events in this place like clan page. --Baya 23:00, 20 June 2007 (EEST)

Now you tell me. :-P Should I delete the categories or leave them as they are until you recode them? Wikiacc (talk) 04:02, 22 June 2007 (EEST)
  • As you want :) I think that it can be deleted after... --Baya 10:22, 22 June 2007 (EEST)

[edit] About Delano's

hi Wikiacc, for more information about Delano Family take a look at Delano Kinred, wikipedia:Delano family, wikipedia:Richard Warren and wikipedia:Francis Cooke pages.

I think that it is necessary to create a new category, may be... like Pilgrims or Mayflower passengers, not yet I know as it is the most correct name. what do you think about this? regards--R0MAN0 23:13, 1 October 2007 (EEST)

[edit] about Babel X user language

  • "Commons:Babel" is in English. "Commons:Babel pt" is translated to Portuguese and viewed in PT localization ! How translate User Language to Localization PT ? Use same name of page ? If I translate "user language" to portuguese in PT preferences the English/original version will be keep ??? Thanks. Morais 21:44, 28 April 2008 (EEST)
    • It would be easier to translate Rd Engine:Babel here to a new page, Rd Engine:Babel pt, and have users use {{User language}} at Engine. All the templates are already here, and there are a lot of them, so it would be very time-consuming to copy them all. --Wikiacc () 00:50, 4 May 2008 (EEST)
  • Hi! I'm replacing Babel by User Language at PT Localization...
WHY I need to copy each language template to local PT localization... if their contents are the same for all localizations ? To simplify process, what can you do to everyone reuse same TEMPLATES (/pt, /en, /fr, etc...) in ALL localizations ? Exists an option to "include" code from other localization, as engine ? Or can move these pages to other NAMESPACE common to all languages ? Thanks. Morais 03:37, 28 November 2008 (EET)
  • It would be easier to tell everyone on PT to link to their profiles on Engine and use the templates on Engine instead. --Wikiacc () 04:24, 29 November 2008 (EET)

[edit] Thank you from Almoustine

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your work on helping me to clean up the duplicate records for Ancient Persia. Duplicate records are such a pest, but the very fact that we are committed to taking the time to do it is what differentiates this database from all the others. BTW... I am getting a strange error whenever I try to log in to rodovid.org. Maybe you can help me. Have you ever seen this error before? Do I need to refer it to Baya?

Warning: fopen(/usr/home/rodovid/www/serialized/messages-rd_en-wiki_) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /usr/home/rodovid/www/includes/MessageCache.php on line 103

Almoustine 20:50, 24 May 2008 (EEST)

Another question with regard to duplicate lineages...Perhaps you could post the category and template for duplication marking on the main page discussion so that others entering information can mark duplicate entries when they encounter them. I am sure that I will be aiding you in your efforts to remove duplicate lineages as soon as I am finished entering my mother's generations and start on the Surname/Clan Reference guide. Almoustine 17:49, 25 May 2008 (EEST)

[edit] Huge Problem noticed with French Kings

Hello, thanks for the tips on the clean up protocol... I will do better. BTW why did all of the information on the French kings in the EN database(from Merovek) get overwritten by newer versions from the portuguese?. Way inconvenient because the newer versions are not in English. Was this a mistake or part of a global import or change...If the later I have concerns since a lot of valuable family links are now obscured by the newer record information Almoustine 02:04, 9 June 2008 (EEST)

A question about yoru Bot program. Can it perform global lineage update in the EN database?: We need to have all the following lineage designations Mérovingiens Merovíngios Merovek

Wherever they occur in the English database, changed to Merovec. Almoustine 03:35, 9 June 2008 (EEST)

I can't find any examples of this overwriting, could you provide some? Thanks, Wikiacc () 22:10, 9 June 2008 (EEST)

It wasnt so much overwriting as it was with a problem of someone unlinking an earlier localized record and linking to newer records in an alternate language DB and pulling them in to the English DB. I found the older records again but it took some sleuthing to do so. there is a lot of duplication removal efforts to be performed in the genealogy of the Frankish Kings. BTW Basina was the wife of Basinus (Basin) who left him for Childeric I. Basina was a Thuringii title equating to Princess. Her actual name was Menia. I have left them linked in you might want to start there. Almoustine 22:32, 11 June 2008 (EEST)

OK. I haven't been able to tell who is doing this. I figured out what the deal was with Basina/Menia after researching it a bit on Wikipedia, but thanks for the clarification. There seem to be some four or five records for her alone... --Wikiacc () 22:51, 11 June 2008 (EEST)

[edit] Issues with the lineage of Henry the Fowler

Good Morning :) I am sure you have run into the virtual Gordion Knot associated with en:Person:90046. I have marked the appropriate original and the duplicates but left everything linked in so far. I have made every attempt to delete those duplicates that I may have contributed, but there remain several that I cannot delete. Could you double check those entries and we could work together to get this lineage streamlined and linked in properly. I fret about this one in particular just because Henry Fowler is a gateway ancestor for virtually every known European royal lineage. Thanks in advance Almoustine 18:44, 13 July 2008 (EEST)

It all seems to be sorted out, and I have deleted all the duplicates I've found. There might be a few problems lurking around but it seems that the problems have been dealt with. --Wikiacc () 00:19, 15 July 2008 (EEST)

[edit] Adoption...

Wikiacc, you changed parents of pt:Person:45934, adding LINKED TO on ADOPTION EVENT... but the TREE show only 1 LINE/draw with same color to both parents ! :-( This person wasn't selected on ADOPTION because tree/lines not preparated to show other line/color for adoption... Are you verifing and adjusting TREEs with this event (ADOP) or can I revert your change ? Thanks. Morais 10:01, 7 October 2008 (EEST)

I didn't change the parents at all, so the tree did not change. The tree does not consider <linkedto>, it only looks at parents listed in <parents>. The tree looks exactly the same as it did before the change... --Wikiacc () 01:31, 8 October 2008 (EEST)

[edit] ein paar Probleme

Hallo ! Was meinst du ? Amicalement - Marc ROUSSEL - --Markus3 09:15, 3 November 2008 (EET)

Hello! As you have seen, we have a few problems with a user from Tunisia, User talk:FAÏZA ZOUAOUI. Can you clear up for me why you deleted records, and not simply emptied them? Every record has a number. When a record again is "clean", it can again become used, can it not? What happened now with the deleted records/numbers? Can they later be used again? I find it easy, much more practical (and logical) to empty the bad (or duplicate) records. What is your opinion? Translation by Wikiacc.

Hallo Marc! Danke, Wikiacc () 02:35, 4 November 2008 (EET)
Hello Marc! I have seen the problems with Faïza Zouaoui. She has made 2 or 3 records for a person...in the English Rodovid we have a method (en:Help:Merging): the person whose number is greater is deleted. After it is deleted, it should not be used again. It is very important that for ONE number there is only ONE person. (I can argue about this better in English than in German.) Also, a clean record counts in en:Rodovid Statistics, and a deleted record does not count. I have deleted almost all double records, and I wrote the method...it is better when double records are deleted.

[edit] Babel

from User talk:Bergsmit#Babel Hello Bergsmit,

I see that you've made an attempt to create Babel templates on the NL localization. Since the entire Rodovid community, not just NL, is at Engine, it's preferred that users go to Engine and use the User language template instead. All the templates are already there, and it's possible to go to the and see what languages everyone speaks. I strongly recommend that you delete the Babel templates on NL and use only the Engine system. This is the reason why the Babel templates on EN were dismantled. I've deleted Commons:Babel because if you are going to do Babel templates on NL (again, not a good idea) it should be called Rodovid NL:Babel and be in Dutch, not in English. Your thoughts? --Wikiacc () 3 jul 2009 19:51 (EEST)

It is easier if all contributors have only one user page and one talk page at engine and that Babel then belongs to that user page !--Fred Bergman 22:20, 6 July 2009 (EEST)

Yes, I'd agree. I've moved all of the Babel on NL to the corresponding user pages at Engine; I'll delete the templates and categories at NL if there is no problem. --Wikiacc () 22:36, 6 July 2009 (EEST)

[edit] First proposal for rules

Hi Wikiacc.

Thanks for your words on Baya's discussion page.

I began to propose rules on this page:

[edit] Rules release Alpha 3

Well, there is no major disagreement. As Baya proposed it on his talk page, I think we should begin to apply Main Rules as an alpha version, and to look how it runs...

It seems that additional rules need more technical development.

I think we should begin this on July 20. We have to tell that to the 45 administrators. Could anybody help? --Christophe Tesson - talk. 11:05, 14 July 2010 (EEST)

[edit] Bot

Hi again. I saw you made bot for rodovid - what it's doing here? Is it difficult to make bot for welcoming?

--Igor 19:48, 20 August 2010 (EEST)

The bot hasn't done anything yet, but my idea is that it'll run basic find-and-replace functions on the xml in person pages. I haven't figured out how to write it in pywikipedia, but rodovid is set up to work with it if I do. It's not difficult to make a welcoming bot and in fact you can probably find the code for one on the internet. Welcoming bots are very common on wikipedia and the wikimedia projects. [edit] Current Events

What's the idea of removing Australia, New Zealand etc. from the world leaders list?

Is only America allowed to have a world leader?

Then why add Liechtenstein?

Ruszewski 10:27, 18 November 2010 (EET)

The purpose of the Current Events page is to highlight the Rodovid profiles we have, not a collection of links to Wikipedia. The Australia, New Zealand, etc. leaders don't have Rodovid profiles, but Liechtenstein and the US do. If someone added profiles for the leaders of Australia, New Zealand, etc. then they should be linked to from the Current Events page, but otherwise there is no point. [edit] False information in Rodovid

Hello
I tried to talk with the admin Almoustine, but he has protected his talk page against editors.
The problem is that Almoustine has made a webpage with tremendous implications for Genealogy and all the studies of nobility. He claims that Fritigil, Queen of the Marcomanni is the mother of Faramond; and also clamis that she is the granddaughter of some kings of Georgia.
This has far reaching consequences. From wikipedia "Descent from antiquity is an ultimate challenge in prosopography and genealogy". This would make the merovingian kings the descendants of virtually all the Diadochi, achieving effective descent from the Classical Antiquity.
The main source of biographical data for Faramond are three one-liners in the work of Gregory of Tours. His father Sunno is mentioned. His mother is not.
Another false claim is that Flavia Bassina, the daughter of a roman, is the same Basina married with Clodius.
This two fakes combined would trace the merovingians up to both Philip I of macedon (through Ptolomaeus), and the Julio-Claudian dynasty (through Julia Caesaris, the sister of Caesar).
I ask that Rodovid either sources its claims or deletes them. --Baldric 19:34, 27 February 2011 (EET)

[edit] "Améliorations requises"

Greetings Tesson,

After a long time away from Rodovid I found this page. While my French is horrible, what I gather is that you're trying to make a distinction in Rodovid, between trees and parent/child relations grounded in verifiable fact and primary sources, and those grounded in speculation and legend. I was actually thinking about issues like this a while back (see [1] and [2]). I think the issue is not English vs French but legend vs modern era, because many English speaking genealogists are not like Almoustine, but I support what I understand of the proposed changes on this page. Keep me updated (email is best) on what happens with this proposal. Wikiacc () 11 décembre 2011 à 19:45 (EET)

Hi Wikiacc,
glad to see you around again.
I'm affraid my english is as horrible as your french is. It doesn't matter.
I have to admit I made lots of mistakes with almoustine. Even if my opinion is that her work is useless, I do have to work WITH her. Because if we want to build a community around Baya's work, we have to colaborate all to gether. And peoples who don't agree will have the need to colaborate. Admins have to show the path. (hum, am I too much grandiloquent? ;-)
Of course issue is not between English vs French, this was a kind of joke. But you may notice that french localization of Rodovid has a huge amount of catégories (typicaly french!) and is the only one localisation using Source name space.
So do you want me to translate at least the false-screen shots I've build for Améliorations requises? Maybe it could be interesting for everybody.
So you could open a discussion in English localization about that. I guess it could be important.
I wish you a merry Xmas and a happy new year. --Christophe Tesson - talk. 20:20, 11 December 2011 (EET)

That is not too grandiloquent--I agree that the admins need to show the example for collaboration. This is something that all of Rodovid should be more aware of, and I think part of the problem is that English users are not aware of the Source namespace. It would be excellent if you could translate those false screen shots, perhaps we can have a discussion on Engine. I think all of Rodovid will be interested. Merry Christmas to you too. Wikiacc () 21:47, 11 December 2011 (EET)

Cool, I'll do this translation during next week! Some photoshop upon an english snapshhot to do. The problem is the Baya's ability to do the work. I guess he has time to spent in something else more important than Rodovid. Though I understand he tries to keep author's rights upon Engine...
So, we'll try to start that discussion on Engine. Thanks a lot. --Christophe Tesson - talk. 22:49, 11 December 2011 (EET)

Done! Is there any problem with the wording? --Christophe Tesson - talk. 22:31, 12 December 2011 (EET)

This is great and very helpful. Thank you. The wording could be either "first hand"/"second hand" or "primary"/"secondary"--but both are just as good.

From what I gather from talking to him, Baya has had a very busy schedule for the past few years, which is why GEDCOM import, etc. have been put on hold so long. I wonder if there is a way for the community to contribute and help Baya finish the work, without requiring him to release all the source code. Wikiacc () 18:25, 24 December 2011 (EET)

About Gedbot import, see: Gedbot. It's stoped, but it could start again any day. Have you any knowledge in Python-programming?

[edit] English merge template

Hi, I just noticed that I unwittingly undid this edit you made. I think the syntax should be {{merge|<number>}} for the following reasons:

  1. When the English version of a page has not been initialized yet, the other language's "merge" template will display correctly
  2. Consistency with en:Template:Mergewithfamily

What is your reasoning for preferring {{merge|Person:<number>}} instead? Wikiacc () 18 août 2020 à 20:25 (EEST)

► Hi Wikiacc!

Sorry for delay, I spent three weeks in a "without Internet Area" for holydays.

I understand what you're talking about. I made this edit because

  • It was the same syntax than french version
  • It was not creating "red links". As you know, Rodovid automaticly creates "red links" to "Place:" pages and "Lineage:" pages. So then tracking "red links" is a very usefull tool to correct users' errors. But it needs to be done every day week…

So, we have to find a solution: building a template

  • ok with other languages
  • creating no "red links"

Any idea? --Christophe Tesson - talk. 24 août 2020 à 10:51 (EEST)

Thanks for the clarification Tesson! I think the problem is that we need to distinguish between "good" red links (links to valid Person: pages with data in another localization) and "bad" red links (like the ones you mentioned). If there's no way to do so, I will defer to you. What is the process for checking red links? Wikiacc () 19:13, 11 October 2020 (EEST)
