I am a huge wiki fan and yester thought that we need to have a wikigenealogy site and I am very very happy to see that both you and wikitree exists. BUT, we need to consolidate an unite under one unbrella. I am a huge wiki fan and yesterday I thought that we need to have a wikigenealogy site and I am very very happy to see that both you and wikitree exists—huge kudos to you both. But, we need to consolidate and unite under one umbrella for a number of reasons as listed below:
- Young projects -- both projects are relatively young so the sooner it is done the better.
- limited resources – Having multiple sites means that we are both loosing because talent is being used effectively
- Official Wikigenealolgy site – having one site will help to leverage acceptance as a wiki site having two sites will make the selection tough.
The next step:
- Create a dialogue – discuss pros and cons for merging and to identify the key issues
- Discuss and vote – both parties need to come together and have a moderated IRC meeting with the core site developers.
- Incorporate as an 501(c)3 nonprofit organization:
- Write the bylaws and articles for the organization and file etc..
- Develop phase one budget
- Develop marketing/fundraising plan
I am willing to volunteer my time to help get the above going. But lets start talking! User:H0riz0n
You are studied and have expirience :). As exterior observer, you can compare advantages and disadvantages of both projects and will be (I hope) not bad referee :). Also you can take a look on http://werelate.org (it is contain usefull general information about names, surnames and places that can be used during genealogiacal research...) Some words about merging I wrote here.
- Regarding WeRelate.org, we officially launched our website at a genealogy conference last week and got a lot of feedback from people interested in uploading their gedcoms. Gedcom import is now a high priority for us. WeRelate is non-profit, and I spend full-time working on it (along with two part-time people). We have members of the LDS Church Family History Department and the Allen County Public Library (the largest genealogy libraries) on our board. Our goal is to have gedcom import, wiki-page generation and editing, and gedcom export working within the next few months. We'll then work on a background matching algorithm to identify potential matches between uploaded individuals (I've written one of these before). I'd be interested in partnering with people who are interested.--Dallan 20:49, 22 March 2006 (EET)
[edit] Wikia
(How about having a merger possibilities page here too, to discuss this?)
As is known by at least two users of this site, there is also a genealogy Wikia, which has over 4,000 articles and can use a GEDCOM for uploading people-pages. It is free of cost: the Wikia people support it with side-panel advertisements. They also upgrade the software from time to time (eg going into "1.6" this week). It has at least one other slight advantage over this site in its licence/license - using the same one as Wikipedia, it can copy pages about people and places from Wikipedia. In principle I approve of having a single site that everyone contributes to, but we don't have that and probably never will; some contributors may prefer the GFDL and therefore want to use the Wikia. Anyway, as an amateur genealogist of about 50 years' standing, I expect I will lend a hand at all three or four. Robin Patterson 11:20, 4 April 2006 (EEST)
I think that simple coping data from Wikipedia is a wrong way. Wikipedia contains general (global) information about persons -- not a genealogical data with all links and realtions.... Crosslinking is a better idea. So different licences are possible. In any way as I understand defference between CC and GDPL is only one -- under CC users must refere to originator? --Baya 15:01, 4 April 2006 (EEST)
